Monday Memos...

-Seneca
***
Ahhh... Progress.

Its like dancing to a song you don't know, your body isn't sure where the next tone is coming from so it just moves in a general direction. You can spaz out and do the sprinkler or just stand in one spot and try to figure out how those dancers get one buttcheek going in one direction and the other cheek in the opposite. What you do during the song is your own personal progress and most of us want to be able to at least find a little rhythm...

The desire to progress as a writer is strong. Once you have placed your idea on paper and realize that you not only believe in it but want to share it, you have progressed a bit further. Every site I visit that talks about becoming a better writer beats the same drum: WRITE. WRITE AGAIN & AGAIN & AGAIN - every day.

I find that they are right. Every time I sit down to work on my WIP I want it to be better than the day before. It isn't that I think the previous day's words lack in any way, it is merely that I want to make it even more engaging today. When revision time circles around, I want to see my mistakes, my trouble areas and discover how to make them better. Because there is a goal, there is a light that I want to see shining upon my face and there is a desire to see it welcomed by my peers.

Progress is measured not necessarily by a book deal or best seller, it can be in the simplest form. You may see it when you discover that your vocabulary has grown and descriptions become less of a distraction. It may be when you finally discover how to get the printer to quit screeching every time you put the paper in. Ah yes, it may be when you finish a chapter where your character's inner turmoil is found to be their greatest strength and you, the writer, were able to showcase the event in a way that made your reader truly believe in the story.

Progress has been something mankind has always sought, we see it in the iPad, we see it in the hybrid car, we see it in the non-stick skillet, in the SHAMWOW cloth (yeah don't tell me you haven't seen THAT infomercial), its in the clothing we wear and the movies we watch...It surrounds us in every other area. So why not put energy towards progress in our writing...

Focus on your passion and you will discover that the desire to progress is there bubbling quietly beneath the surface...That desire just might be what helps you type THE END while sipping your favorite drink getting ready for revisions and book two...

Blood... Pain...MURDER SCENE BLOGFEST!

***
Oh the brilliant, wonderful, crazy and seemingly dark Anne Riley is hosting today's blogfest...

A MURDER SCENE!!!

*SCREAMS-ECHO-THROUGH-MYHOUSE*

This one was new for me - it was late Friday night, in the dark, that I wrote the kill...
so you are warned....
Be sure to check out everyone else's entries...I am sure they will keep you up tonight..

*MUAHAHAHAHAHA*
***

White goosebumps appeared along the soft curve of her neck. Trailing fingers across the skin raised thoughts of silk, raw and slippery.

The whimper that escaped between glossy pink lips was music in its most carnal form. Flesh squirmed against the leather, the soft curves of her hips molded into the cushion as she tried to escaped into the chair.

There is no where for her to go. I wonder why she tries?

Her eyes were covered with cloth, making her acutely aware of her surroundings. Every step that I made she reacted. It was a game now.

I would run my hand over the chair making the leather speak and she would jump like a rabbit.

The sound of my toe tapping on the floor made her tears flow freely. Then there was when I would press the blade against the steel. At just the right angle the blade would release a shrill metallic scream and her body would almost convulse in fear.

It was beautiful.

Large glass doors behind her mirrored my every move. It was my own private reality show.

I think perhaps she has waited long enough.

My cheeks burned from the smile. It was too much, I need to do it too badly.

Perhaps I should wait?

Her breathing had turned into hiccups.

No. Hiccups annoy me.

I leaned over and slid the blade's dull edge against her arm. Laughter bubbled into my throat as she bounced in the chair; rope dug deeper into her ankles with every movement.

Flipping the knife over I made a small incision on her wrist. Crimson flowed against her blue jeans creating a splotchy design on her right leg.

Awww, that's not right, its uneven now.

I began to make incisions everywhere, at first she wiggled, fighting blindly. Her head whipped in every direction trying to find where the next slice would happen.

It was hilarious.

After dozens of cuts the boredom was too much and the mess would be unseemly.

Laying the knife down on the table I waited to see how much strength she had wasted. The last few cuts were large and she was bleeding so much now that the whimper was gone. I pulled off her blindfold to see her eyes were rolled back.

It would not be long before she was no longer any fun at all. Resigned to boredom there is nothing left to do but finish.

Well, she's ruined the chair...hmmmm...

Pulling the chair towards the sliding doors I had an idea. Quickly I gathered the supplies and put them on the patio. The ground was still damp from all the rain.

Perfect!

My breathing was labored after finally getting her at the edge of the grass. Turning her towards the woods so that she could have a good view.

I poured the foul liquid over her head, careful to not let it get on my new shoes.

The martini I had made glistened in the moonlight; the candles I had placed for ambiance reflected in the doors. Sliding down onto the chaise lounge I got comfortable and picked up the book that I had been reading before she had come into the house.

What on earth was he thinking, telling his mistress to meet him here? tsk tsk Ah well, she'll do.

Smiling, I lit the match, lighting the candles one by one. I watched the flames flicker for a moment before tossing another match towards the chair.

Tall orange flames ignited as I turned the page to chapter one; sipping dry gin with a twist of lime my body relaxed.

Nothing like a good book by a roaring fire.

Dreams are what we live for...

-Gail Devers

***
I dream.

I dream vividly.

I dream while the moon is high,
I dream while the sun shines upon my face,
I dream while I drive,
I dream while I work,
for every day that I live ..... I dream.

Sometimes I find myself lost in the current WIP, seeing in my mind how the scene is playing out. Watching my characters determined to tell their tale, its then that I understand the dream. There are moments where I am swept away by the dream. When the music lifts and the feeling swells I am encompassed by the dream. I never truly know where it comes from or where it may lead, I only know that within it I find myself daily.

Life allows us these stolen glimpses of what we can be as well as what we are.

We work on the dream,
we dedicate our time to the dream,
we yearn for the dream
we live for its reality.

Most importantly it is our belief in the dream that matters. We must believe that these moments are not wasted, that the time is precious and that our goal is worth fighting for. Dreams have been crushed throughout history because man forgot that the dream cannot be a selfish one; it must be one we share, one we place in the hands of a power that we do not always understand.

Don't forget to dream,
don't forget to have faith in the power of the written word,
don't forget that our visions are important,
don't forget to have faith in the outcome,
don't forget to believe...in yourself.

Wednesdays Written Word: Mutiny

He sits, I sit.
He waits, I wait.
The bowl is on the ottoman, my dog is by my feet.
Twenty nine minutes past eight on the clock, I reach into the bowl.
He opens the slip of paper, I place the laptop on my knees.
MUTINY

Phones were ringing everywhere. The steady stream of conversations would overwhelm the average person, but Sarah wasn't average.

This was her domain. Buying bits of property here and there, raising rents, foreclosing on homes but all for the good of her dream. The protests outside were growing louder but she did not care. Let them scream about rights, what do they know?

"WILLIAM!" She barked.

A balding man in his forties scurried into her office.

"Yes Mrs. Boe" His left hand nervously rolled the pen against his pants leg.

He was a sniveling little person and Sarah loved that she could terrify him.

"Did I not tell you that the Bates proposition was the most important file to oversee?"

"Yes, ma'am." Beads of sweat collected on the shiny peach skin of his forehead. A giddy feeling ran through her as he began to squirm.

"Then why the hell have we not heard from their lawyers?" His eyes bulged and he began to flip through the notepad in his right hand.

"I... um... I thought -"

"Of course you thought William. The problem is your thoughts are worth nothing! DO you hear me? Nothing. I pay you to oversee, to organize, to execute...not to THINK! Get out of here and if I do not have Joseph Bates on my phone in two minutes then you can THINK about where you need to send your resume."

He barely nodded before running from her office. It made her feel complete to know that he would be desperately trying to contact Bates. It made her feel exhilarated to know that he would fail. Joseph Bates was on a flight to Tahiti with his mistress. She would enjoy getting rid of William.

"Mrs. Boe?"

The young woman at the door was new. She had been hired only three months prior but had been a great asset to Sarah's accounting team.

"Yes, Andrea. What can you do for me today?" Sarah moved to the picture window. A sweeping view of the city below gave her a surge of excitement. One day she would own all that she could see. The Bates acquisition would allow her to close down the money sucking hole of a hospital on the corner and that awful non-profit agency two blocks over. Thank God some people understood that only certain types of people should survive in this world.

"You are needed in Conference Hall A on the twenty-third floor." Andrea stood tall and determined. Sarah could admire her confidence, though Andrea's backbone could do with some strengthening she showed potential.

"Whatever for? I have no meetings there today." Sarah waved off the information and sat down to look at her daily agenda. Five foreclosures and one lawsuit. The lawsuit was a silly misunderstanding about eviction rights and the foreclosures were merely proof of her greatness.

"Mrs. Boe, I believe that this is important. You might find it...quite...unexpected, but I assure you it is something you won't want to miss." Andrea turned and disappeared around the corner.

Sarah sat pondering the girl's words. She should have demanded an explanation but the little twit had moved too quickly. She should have yelled, but alas she was saving that for William.

She decided to just forget about the entire exchange and make some notes on some acquisition papers. The Bates file was something that needed extra care. She had been through nine assistants since the start of it and every one of them had tried to file for unemployment. She had managed to implicate each of them in some form of office theft making them exonerated from assistance. Employees really are just play things, after all.

Smiling she gazed around her office. Plaques lined the walls, framed documents that outlined her accomplishments. There were photos too. Some of the people she had ever so kindly removed from their homes and places of work. She was always sure to have a polaroid on hand for moments like those.

Relaxing she sat back and thought of the seventy employees who answered to her every whim. They were her minions, her lackeys and most of all hers to control. People think that money is just money but ahh she knew better. Money can make the average man go mad with greed or give up a life of luxury for a lazy life with others. You just had to discover which type of person you were hiring.

The lights of her telephone lit up and she waited for the buzz from the front desk. It never came. She realized William had not returned with his failed response.

"WILLIAM! WILLIAM!" She bellowed. No answer. Actually there was silence in the front office. It was never quiet on her floor. All her minions worked hard to constantly be on the phone, of course hoping to have her avoid them if she thought they were working. She knew that trick.

Moving to the open work area she saw an empty space. The desks, the phones, the files were still there, but no minions. Rage filled her. There was no fire alarm, no off time, no break time where they could all be gone. Stomping across the room she entered the hall. The receptionist desk was empty.

Then it hit her, the twenty-third floor. Well, no matter what it was, NOTHING excused this behavior. She had never fired so many at one time. Her heart rate quickened with excitement. The ultimate firing. She would clean house. Gleefully she pushed the elevator button.
Stepping into the small elevator car she paused.

Shit. She can't fire them all. Who would she keep? As names began to flit through her mind the bell arriving had her remembering where she was going. The doors opened and people crowded the hall way. They had been talking but when they saw her silence fell on the crowd.

"WHAT ARE YOU ALL DOING? Did you forget that you are employed? Is there some astonishing reason that you all feel you can just NOT work today?" She walked through to the conference hall smirking at face after face. "Well, let me inform you that there will be a much quieter scene upstairs tomorrow. At least half of you will be going home....FOR GOOD-"

At the glass doors she froze. Standing beside Andrea was Joseph Bates. He wore a dark suit and a smile.

"Mr. Bates. I'm... I'm so sorry, I had no idea you were here today." Flustered she crossed the room to shake his hand. Andrea watched and nodded. Sarah looked from Andrea to Joseph and paused.

"You.. you..." She let the words hang.

Joseph placed his arm around Andrea's waist and Sarah felt her stomach drop.

This was not good.

He held a blue file in his hands. The file she would have had William get for her, the one with the contracts.

"Joseph I don't understand."

"You must realize Mrs. Boe that there are complaints. Serious complaints, some are even on tape. The other week when you slapped that young girl for spilling your coffee. Two days ago when you had William clean your office with a toothbrush, a cup, baking soda and lemon juice. Then there is this morning. You threatened the security guard over the phone with eviction or expulsion of his children from school."

"These are all circumstantial...you have no p-p-pr-proof -" Sarah stuttered. The air had left her as she glanced around the room. Her minions all stood watching, waiting for something she could not even stomach to think about.

"No. William has proof of all your transgressions." William stepped forward smiling, no longer nervous, actually smug. "Now you will be held in the room next door until sufficient law enforcement arrives. You should know that you are being arrested for assault by the way."

"No one here will tell you anything that I have done. NOTHING!" Sarah screamed. Her hands were shaking.

"Now, Mrs. Boe, I think you are mistaken. However all of these things will disappear so long as you do. There is a piece of paper in my hands. It signs over the rights to the company. Mr. Bates will oversee the acquisitions and the employees will each be given a share. We will allow you to keep one share and the apartment you live in, of course is yours. If you don't sign then you will lose everything." William opened the file and placed a pen on top.

Sarah's pulse was erratic. The faces swam around her. For the first time in her life she felt powerless. She wanted to yell, to crush the smirks and fire them all. Tapes would destroy her. There were some, she knew, who frowned upon her methods. Her throat began to close as she realized that they had accomplished exactly what she coveted: control.

"You conniving...I pay you..." she mumbled as she read the document. They were taking it all. Deep down she was impressed by the move but it was overshadowed by anger.

She signed the document and stood up.

"I believe that everyone has the rest of the day off." Straightening her suit as she stood. She nodded to William, Andrea and Joseph, then walked to the elevator.

As she pressed the button a loud cheer went up behind her and her world came crashing down.

Monday Memos!

-Therese of Lisieux

How often do you go into a bookstore and see the big round table right past the doors full of the newest releases? All the time, right? Well the above quote is one that I feel not only can be applied to our various flower gardens but also to writers/authors. That first table is just a taste of what the store holds, it might stand out right by the door but that is not where the fun ends!

We all want to be the rose, the NYT best selling - most successful author. Trust me, I dream big, yet there is a larger part of me that just wants to be a bright flower in the garden; a book on the table or on the shelf. I want to add a punch of color, maybe trail along the stone borders or climb up the trellis. I know that I may not be the first flower that everyone flocks too but I am someone's favorite. The rose is something great to strive for, I think it best to first work to just be planted and then after some hard work, rain, sunshine and, most important, love, maybe just maybe what sprouts is something that returns year after year adding its unique color and design to the best spring bouquet.

You think your cat likes to interrupt your Writing? Meet Peanut Butter Barr...

Yep... all these blogs show their cats crawling over their computers and you rarely see the canine corruption that occurs.

Well lately I have been plastered to my laptop. Revisions, revisions, new projects in the works, regular blogging, email... you know, the usual suspects (awesome movie by the way, great story telling).

Peanut Butter Barr is our shih-tzu and by far the most adorable dog ever. (we aren't biased - we are just right) He happens to be a mama's boy. This means that wherever I am, he is. No matter how much Marcus tries to coax him away he still saunters over to me. Now on Saturdays I try to spend family time with him and Marcus. I still write but more when they are napping, early morning or late late evening.

Today has been a big computer day and Peanut had enough around 7 p.m. He kept crawling into my lap and trying to sit on the keyboard. So finally I told Marcus to just put a movie in and I would take a break. I told the dog that fine, he won for a little while. Funny thing is he wanted to be sure I kept my word. So I sat the computer on the ottoman and this is what he did:

I guess he wanted to be sure that I was going to watch the movie. How cute is that? (oh & forgive his messy hair, I plan to trim him tomorrow...)

In the beginning...Blogfest

I almost forgot to post this today! Yikes!

Kelly's Compositions is hosting a Blogfest about the very first page of your WIP. What an intriguing idea. I have two WIPs and had to choose...so here goes:
***

Outsiders never understand.

At first glance they see the simple houses, the bustling streets, the neighborly waves and the perfect blue sky. They never look down the alleys or beyond the clapboard homes. They see the young man raking leaves but they don’t see his face. Even when he stops to smile and share a friendly glance they don’t see the truth. The young woman in the diner brings their coffee as they rest from the drive, yet they don’t see her furtive glances and nervous fingers.

People come here, they pass through here, but they never stay. Something makes them keep driving. It’s as though they would like to stay, to experience what looks like the perfect setting for life, yet they can’t. The serenity wavers just as they are deciding.

Maybe it’s the lack of hotels; maybe it’s that we aren’t even close to a large city. Maybe, just maybe, it’s because something in their gut tells them to leave.

That feeling is something we understand all too well.

You should always listen to your instincts.

Thursday...was there something special I was supposed to announce????

So it is Thursday...

I don't normally post on Thursday...

but it seems like there is something I need to announce..

Now what was it?

Gosh I hate to be forgetful

*scratches head and looks around*

Oh! I asked a question of y'all back on March 18...

What book do you cherish the most & why?

Let me start by saying my mood would play hugely in the ultimate selection. For example:
On a happy day - Pride & Prejudice - it is a love story unlike any other and well, who doesn't love Elizabeth Bennet. She is a woman of strength, dreams and talent.
On a sad day - Shakespeare's Sonnets & Plays - The Bard knew Tragedy & Sacrifice like no other
On a depressed day - Emily Dickinson's poetry - she was an interesting woman and could get down in the dumps better than most, but she found her silver linings and crawled towards them when she needed to - my kind of style
On an adventurous day - Alice In Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass - Lewis Carroll has taken me many times to that marvelous land and each visit I see something new
On a sentimental day - Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows - Harry has come so far and reflects on things in this one in a way that made me feel like I was standing there with him putting the pieces together.

So there are just a snippet of my mood swing selections, for the ultimate choice...the one singular book....
Little Women: Alcott nailed some crazy sisterly dynamics with this one. The March sisters are beyond eclectic but their love for one another comes through in every paragraph & it makes me smile every time I read it. It is also the book I re-read every summer & was one of the first books that helped me realize that I wanted to be a writer at a very young age.

Y'all gave me wonderful answers & I loved reading every one of them! Now as for something I did not know...I learned A LOT! about skunks, earthquakes, Denzel Washington, children, travels...
You guys are the best - it is wonderful to get to know you all!

Was there anything else I needed to mention.....?
*snapsloudlywithfingers*

THAT'S RIGHT!

I HELD A CONTEST...

Now where did I put all those entries....???

hmmm....

Oh goodness, you know what it is?

! I forgot - I decided to cancel the contest & keep all the goodies for myself!

*Muahahahahahahaha*

forgive my crazy, spastic movements & talking to my computer....
it was 12:34 in the a.m....my dog thought I was nuts!

WAIT!

Oh yeah, I decided to throw in a bonus winner!
Yep!
So the second name drawn will win any YA book of their choice
(even a Pre-Order if they like)...see who won...

I will be emailing the winners for their details!
Whew! Okay, so if you did not win, never fear I am slowly creeping up to 200 Followers & you know me and round numbers...I just HAVE to hold a contest! lol

Have a Terrific Thursday!
